Ward 7 councillor Taruvinga Duvai said the waiting mother’s shelter would help reduce maternal deaths as more women would be able to deliver safely at the health centre. Last year, Midlands province recorded 49 maternal deaths.

“We expect the waiting shelter to help in reducing maternal deaths as more women would be able to deliver at the clinic rather than at home,” Duvai said.

At the moment pregnant women in the ward are referred to St Theresa Hospital at Charandura Growth Point, some 30km away from the clinic.

“The villagers have joined hands in moulding bricks with each village contributing and the builders will also come from the same locals,” he said.

“This is not the first time that the villagers in the ward have united in developmental projects in the area.”

Last year the villagers repaired two boreholes to ease water shortages.
