THE body of the late former Cabinet minister and Zanu PF politburo member, Sikhanyiso Ndlovu, will be flown to Harare this afternoon, after a send-off ceremony to be held at his Sunninghill house.

Zanu PF had initially chosen Bulawayo Amphitheatre for the ceremony, but the late Ndlovu’s brother, Simangaliso, said the family had instead settled for Sunninghill.

Ndlovu, who will be buried tomorrow at the National Heroes Acre after he was declared a national hero, died at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo on Tuesday morning after suffering a stroke.

“The ceremony begins in the morning at 8am and is likely to end at around 12 noon after which we head to the airport to fly to Harare with his body,” Simangaliso said.

“We felt, as a family, Bulawayo Amphitheatre is too big and will be costly for us. Sunninghill is a big venue and it will accommodate many who want to come,” he said.

Simangaliso said he expected Zanu PF to assist the family with financial resources and transport for the travelling public as it had consistently done for other national heroes’ families.

“We expect Zanu PF to assist with transport and other logistical support as it had done to other families during such times. So far, they have been assisting,” he added.

A veteran of the liberation struggle, Ndlovu was a senior member of the late Vice-President Joshua Nkomo’s PF-Zapu before the 1987 Unity Accord and had since independence held several party and ministerial positions.

In April 1995, Ndlovu was appointed Higher and Tertiary Education deputy minister until April 2000.

He was appointed Information and Publicity minister in 2007. In April 2014 he lost Zanu PF central committee elections in Bulawayo.

He is survived by his wife, three children — a son and two daughters — and seven grandchildren.
