Addressing captains of industry and business community in Bulawayo, Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) president Busisa Moyo said the government should declare Matabeleland region an SEZ.

“We have been talking a lot about the issue of SEZs but it seems it is very slow. As CZI, we have done almost everything we could, but there are some issues that need to be ironed out. We need some piece of legislation to govern, as well as identifying places and funding. After that, we need to invite entrepreneurs and investors to participate,” he said.

Moyo said there was need for the government to consider the issue of interest rates reduction. He said interest rates in Zimbabwe were too high and government should move swiftly to address that.

He also touched on the issue of cost of doing business, saying it was too high compared to other countries in the region.

Moyo said there was need for Zimbabwe to urgently review its business operations, focusing on 12 investor concerns which include collaboration, consistency in policy, consumption, competitiveness, costs, corruption, courage, convergence, conversations, confidence, currency, common sense and copying.

He said common sense requires the country to seriously discuss the state of the economy as a matter of urgency in order to achieve development.

Speaking at the same event, ZNCC past president Obert Sibanda said there was need for the government to clarify the indigenisation law, as there were a lot of inconsistences.

“There is need for the government to clarify the indigenisation law because we have had quite a number of ministers heading that ministry but all coming up with different approaches to the law,” he said.
