The Mbembesi Bridge, which took more than two decades to complete, gobbled $3,2 million, he said.

“The government is also in the process of mobilising funds to work on the Ingwengwezi Bridge which requires $5,1 million.”

Transport minister Joram Gumbo said next year the government will commission the Ngwengwezi Bridge.

Villagers in Matabeleland North have always been calling on government to complete the construction of the Bulawayo–Nkayi Road which links Bulawayo with Gokwe, Bubi and Nkayi.

The road has narrow bridges which have been blamed for accidents.

Speaking at the same occasion, Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs minister Cain Mathema said rehabilitation of the road was one of the priority projects.

“We want to commercialise all our economic activities because we don’t want to continue with subsistence shops and farming,” Mathema said.

He also urged government to upgrade Tsholotsho — Bulawayo and Tsholotsho — Lupane roads.
