The mayor, under normal circumstances, presides over the fund and distributes proceeds to the less privileged as gifts over the festive season.

The target for this year’s fund has been set at $20 000, up from $15 000 in the past two years.

Gweru City Council commission chairperson, Tsunga Mhangami told Southern Eye yesterday that preparations to set up the fund were “a bit slow”.

He said the annual Mayor’s Cheer Fund dinner, the main fundraising project, would not be held this year due to time constraints.

“We are going to have the Mayor’s Cheer Fund even though preparations are a bit slow. We might not have the fundraising dinner, as usual, due to time constraints, but the committee is working flat out to see how we can raise funds,” Mhangami said.

“We have put the target for this year at $20 000 and like each and every other year, the money will be used for the welfare of orphans and other underprivileged persons in our city.”

Mhangami appealed to stakeholders and well-wishers to donate for the fund so as to make the annual charity initiative a success. In the past two years, the fund, under the now-suspended Kombayi, failed to beat $15 000 target.
