JOHANNESBURG

Willard Katsande, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Musona and Kaizer Motaung (Jr) got the goals for Chiefs, while Thabo Nthethe scored a great header for Celtic.

Musona pulled a muscle in the second-half and had to be replaced by Motaung (Jr). It was a deserved victory for Amakhosi, who dominated the match — especially in the first half — and should have buried Celtic under an avalanche of goals.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys set the warning bells ringing as early as the fifth minute, when Siboniso Gaxa’s brilliant shot was parried over the bar by Siwelele goalkeeper Moses Thembalethu for a corner. Musona could have given Chiefs the lead in the 15th minute, but his header missed the target by few inches, after a great interchange of passes between him and  Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

After a lot of missed opportunities, Chiefs finally opened the scoring in the 32nd minute via the boot of Willard Katsande, who scored with a long-range scorcher after taking a few steps from the centre line.

Tshabalala made it 2-0 just before half-time with a spectacular bicycle-kick, after being set up by George Lebese on the left flank, leaving Thembalethu rooted to the spot. Celtic started the second half an improved side, after Clinton Larsen brought in Joel Mogorosi and Thabo Nthethe.

The substitutions soon brought dividends for Siwelele as Nthethe headed in a cross from Vuyani Ntanga in the 56th minute to reduce the deficit. Musona warmed the hearts of the Amakhosi faithfuls despite the cold weather conditions in Tshwane when he increased the lead with a powerful shot inside the 18-yard area, after a square pass from Tsepho Masilela in the 67th minute.

Kaizer Motaung put the last nail in Siwelele’s coffin to complete Amakhosi’s victory and hand them a morale boost ahead of the new season.
