This was heard by Gokwe resident magistrate Sheppard Mjanja on Monday when the man aged 68, whose name has been withheld to protect the identity of the victim, appeared before him to answer charges of rape.

The man was not asked to plead to the charge and was remanded in custody to August 5.

The prosecutor Mandla Ndlovu told the court that sometime in August 2010, the man was sleeping in the same room with the complainant, whose age is not disclosed.

He allegedly sneaked under her blankets and raped her.

The girl reported the incident to her grandmother and the family sat down with the accused whom they made to compensate the family with a cow.

It is the State case that the girl’s uncle visited Nhembudziya and was told of what happened.

He was not happy about the compensation issue and he took the girl to the police, where they filed a report, leading to the man’s arrest.

In a similar case, two men from Bigboom Compound in Kwekwe were also locked up in remand prison after they grabbed a woman, assaulted, raped her and stole $20 from her.

This was after one of them had proposed love to her and she declined. Levison Danga (30) and Simbarashe Hungwe (31) were not asked to plead to rape and theft when they appeared before the same magistrate. The magistrate remanded them in custody to August 5.

The court heard that on July 19 this year, the two were at Rolling River in Kwekwe when they met the complainant.

Danga proposed love to her and she turned the proposal down. The two then assaulted her several times before taking her $20 and a cellphone.

Danga allegedly grabbed her and forcefully removed her clothes while his accomplice assisted him.

Hungwe then pinned her down while Danga was raping her. The woman later reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of the two.
