THE Zanu PF politburo has formally expelled Bikita West MP Munyaradzi Kereke from the party and the Speaker of Parliament has been advised to declare a vacancy in the constituency so preparations for by-elections can be made, according to a report on the ZBC website last night.

Kereke had defied the party’s directive to step aside for its preferred candidate Elias Musakwa and went on to win the seat on a Zanu PF ticket after it had also failed to get the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to drop him from its list of nominated candidates.

But Kereke’s fate seemed to have been sealed when President Robert Mugabe said Zanu PF did not tolerate disobedience and those who imposed themselves on the electorate as candidates.

Addressing party supporters in Masvingo ahead of the general elections in July, Mugabe said it didn’t matter how much money or support one had or how much work one has done in the community, that person should follow the party rules.

Without mentioning Kereke by name, Mugabe said no one was greater than the party.
