Contributing to debate on President Robert Mugabe’s speech in the Senate on Tuesday, Mkhwebu said the nine tonnes of maize the Zanu PF leader said would be given to each district as food relief were not enough.

“Drought is very prevalent in Matabeleland South,” he said.

“The President mentioned that each district should be given nine tonnes of maize, which are not sufficient for all the wards. It therefore becomes difficult when it comes to allocation. The government needs to look into this issue.

“As I have said before, drought is very prevalent from where I come from and I plead with the government to make sure that there is enough food for everyone.”

Mkhwebu appealed for government loans to buy fodder for cattle adding there was not enough water for livestock in Matabeleland South.

“In his speech, His Excellency also spoke of Manyange Dam. This dam has been appearing on the blue book for years now. Everyone is expecting the government to do something about this dam as there are water woes in Matabeleland. We are expecting that the dam could be used by about three constituencies.

“There are also boarding schools which could get water from that particular dam as well as the business community.

“A lot of people could make a living from that dam as there is no water,” she added.

Meanwhile, Mkhwebu also appealed for cattle brand marks for each district to curb cattle rustling in Gwanda where one person can lose up to 100 beasts.

“I am hereby pleading on the issue of brand marks so that each and every district has its own brand mark,” she said.
