MOSES Muchenje’s second half strike was enough to keep Caps United in the picture for the Castle Lager Premier Soceer League title as they handed Buffaloes their first home defeat of the season under Timothy Masachi at Sakubva Stadium yesterday.

A failed off-side trap in the 67th minute saw Muchenje outpace defender Temba Ndlovu to place the ball past an advancing Blessing Mandimutsira in goal for the soldiers.

In the reverse fixture in Harare, Buffaloes beat Caps United 1-0 when they were still under the guidance of their former coach Saul Chaminuka, now assistant coach to Taurai Mangwiro at the Green Machine.

Chaminuka was naturally a happy man after the match.

“It was a good performance by our players especially when they were playing in a muddy pitch like this. I am happy the players adapted to the conditions,” Chaminuka said.

Masachi blamed his side’s loss on a series of missed chances.

“We played well, but we missed a lot of chances in the first half. We are playing well, but there were no goals,” he said.

He blamed his defenders for poor defending which resulted in a failed off-side trap that then separated the two teams.

Just a few minutes into the game both teams exchanged fierce raids but it all resulted in a tale of missed chances.

In the 10th minute, Buffaloes strikers stumbled on each other between the goal posts to miss a clear chance when Caps United goalkeeper Muchambo Jorum was already beaten.

Both teams continued their attacking football but it was Caps United that looked more threatening going upfront.

They were finally rewarded in the 67th minute when Muchenje sped past Ndlovu for the crucial goal that saw Caps maintain fifth place with 45 points, the same as FC Platinum, who were thumped 2-0 by Chicken Inn at Luveve Stadium in Bulawayo yesterday.
