This was heard when Garai Siatembe appeared before High Court judge Justice Mafios Cheda sitting in Gweru yesterday facing murder charges.

Outlining the State’s case, prosecutor Tafadzwa Mpariwa said on June 4 2009, Siatembe of Madenyika village under Chief Nemangwe in Gokwe South, met his ex-wife, Anna Mpofu, who was from fetching water.

He allegedly attempted to stop Mpofu saying he wanted to talk to her, but she told him to follow her.

Siatembe remained behind, but later caught up with Mpofu and allegedly struck her on the back of the head with an axe. He also hit her just above her left ear and when she collapsed, the State alleges that he struck her on the chest and ribs several times with the axe.

Mpofu died on her way to Sasame Baptist Clinic.

Siatembe was allegedly incensed that Mpofu once had an affair with his brother, Check, and when he reported the matter to the chief, his brother was only asked to pay two beasts as compensation.

The trial continues tomorrow.
