ELECTRICITY has finally been restored at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) after a week in the dark due to a cable fault.

NQOBANI NDLOVU STAFF REPORTER UBH chief executive officer Nonhlanhla Ndlovu said the hospital was setback by more than $50 000 after it acquired new electrical cables to replace the damaged ones bringing relief to patients and medical personnel who had resorted to using candles for light at night in general wards.

UBH used generators to power emergency and critical wards such as the maternity, intensive care unit (ICU) and theatre departments.

“The electrical fault has been fixed and I can confirm that all departments at the hospital now have electricity,” Ndlovu said on Wednesday.

She said the blackout had been caused by damaged electricity cables.

The high voltage cables are designed for distributing electricity to various departments of big institutions like hospitals, mines, military camps and airports.

The electrical fault had severely disrupted operations with relatives reportedly being advised to take the bodies of their loved ones to private funeral parlours to prevent them from rotting at the UBH mortuary.
