HARARE’S Chapman golf club retained the Dugmore trophy that was competed for over the last weekend at Bulawayo Golf Club.

The Dugmore trophy is an inter-club event and golf clubs from across the country sent teams comprising of four players. The players play a gruelling 72 holes over two days.

The Dugmore is also one of the 19 Zimbabwe Golf Association order of merit events.

Chapman Golf Club were the defending champions and their team for this year’s events comprised of Clive Nguru, Stuart Krogg, Christian Mbanga and Thembelani Vundla.Royal Harare came runners up.

The event attracted the majority of the top amateurs in the country. The Individual trophy was won by Stuart Krogg after he managed to beat Bulawayo Golf Club’s Jack Allard in a play-off after both of them had finished the tournament tied on four over-par. The two were part of the Zimbabwe junior team that participated at the Kenaco World Junior Championships that were held in South Africa two weeks ago.

The Dugmore was also the last qualifying event for selection for the National team that will qualify in the zone XI championships to be held in Cape Town from the 14th to the 18th of April 2014. The eight-member team chosen includes Clive Nguru, Christian Mbanga, Victor Mapwanya, Jack Allard, Staurt Krogg, Thembelani Vundla Pride Sembo and Tonderai Masunga.

Being played alongside the Dugmore was the fellowship trophy which was won by Bulawayo Country Club, while Harry Allen were runners up. The fellowship cup is played by mainly committee members from the different golf courses across the country and the idea is for them to interact and share ideas whilst competing for the trophy.The format is individual stable ford and the participants play a total of 36 holes.

18 holes on Saturday and another 18 holes on Sunday.

On the professional tour Ignatius Ignatius Mketekete rallied from behind to win, the Tour Players Championship that was held at Wingate Park Golf Club in Harare.

Mketekete won the tournament on the first play-off hole after finishing tied on five-under 136 together with the defending champion Tongo Charamba.Mketekete started the final round two shots behind Charamba he however had a good second round and eventually finished the tournament tied with Charamba.

Mketekete received $1 600 prize money for first place while Charamba received $1 040 for coming in second place. Third-placed Zambian Madalisto Muthiya pocketed $800.

The next tournament on the professional tour will be the Pre-Open Classic to be played next Thursday and Friday at Royal Harare Golf Course.
