UZ dominates Zusa games

University of Zimbabwe (UZ) dominated 2014 Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (Zusa) Old Mutual-sponsored track and field championships held at Nust

THE University of Zimbabwe (UZ) dominated the 2014 Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (Zusa) Old Mutual-sponsored track and field championships held at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) on Saturday.

UZ scooped 14 gold, five silver and three bronze medals, beating 10 other universities.

Midlands State University were second with who got seven gold, two silver and seven bronze while Great Zimbabwe University bagged two gold, eight silver and one bronze medal to come third.

The hosts Nust came fourth with two gold, two silver and four bronze followed by Bindura University of Science and Education who managed one gold, five silver and three bronze.

Lupane State University came sixth with one gold, three silver and three bronze while Harare Institute of Technology who got one gold, one silver and three bronze were seventh beating Africa University by only one bronze.

Chinhoyi University of Technology came ninth with only three silver and one bronze medal while Catholic University and Women’s University in Africa came last each without a single medal.

The athlete-of-the-day was Itayi Vambe of UZ who won the 100m race in 10,35secs beating Nust’s Ushe Shava and Nyasha Charandura who finished in 10,67secs and 11,14secs respectively.

Zusa president Liberty Maidza said he was impressed by the improved level of competition compared to last year.

“The level of competition is better than last year. Remember it is not about medals, but about good results; good times for track events and good distances and heights for field events.

“Universities have got talented people and their talent should be exposed so that they fit into the national teams,” he said.

“I am convinced that our team will do better in the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union (Ztisu) track and field events to be hosted by Nust in June.”

Ztisu competitions will see the selection of the national team that will represent the country in the Confederation of Universities and Colleges of Southern Africa competition to be hosted by Zambia in August.
