The race will see the winner of the event walking away with $1 000 for both the men and the women’s races. Last year Wirimai Juwawo won the race in a time of 30mins 18,49secs which was about three minutes less that the 27mins 33secs set by Kudakwashe Shoko at the inaugural addition in 2009. Olivia Chitate won the women’s category in 35mins 32,71secs.

“The Nkulumane fun run will take place on Sunday June 1 and will start at 6:30am. We are excited that the race has continued to grow with the first female and male home set to receive $1 000. A total of $11 000 will be won,” Margaret Vera the Old Mutual regional manager said.

She said they had a responsibility to communities they operate in and the objective of the fun run is to promote well-being and fun.

Vera said they had moved the date forward because they have other races that as an organisation they sponsor.

“We sponsor other races in Harare and Vumba. We can, however, look forward to a half-marathon in the future. The fun run, however, is for families to participate as well. We want all families to be involved,” she said.

Bulawayo athletics board chairman, Manuel Mpofu said registration for the event would end on May 31, but they would also allow athletes to register after the cut off time.

The race has previously attracted athletes who include Rutendo Nyahora, Constance Nyasango, Faith Nyasango and Faith Moyo in the women’s category while in the men’s, Kelvin Pangiso, Phathisa Ngwabi and Luwis Masunda have participated in the event before.
