BULAWAYO magistrate Glamore Mushove yesterday issued a warrant of arrest against a police officer who failed to turn up in court to testify in the case of an Emganwini man who died at a prostitute’s house in October last year.

The disabled and diabetic man Mazo Mgura (41) died at Belinda Chikerema (29)’s Yolanda Flats along Robert Mugabe Way between Connaught and Masotsha Ndlovu avenues after an alleged night of passion.
His wife Lizzy Lunga and relatives suspect that he was drugged before semen was extracted from him resulting in his sudden death.
For the State, Jeremiah Mutsindikwa yesterday called police officer Washington Masawi and when it was noted that he was absent, the State requested that he be issued with a warrant of arrest. Mushove upheld the request.
The State also called Criminal Investigations Department (CID) homicide detective Siyazuza Ncube to testify in the case.
Ncube told the court that when he went to the flat where Mgura died, he found him lying on a mattress with some sugar in the mouth.
“I had the privilege to interview his wife who told me that he was diabetic and even showed me some medical cards to that effect,” he said.

“She said she had given him brown sugar thinking that he had been attacked by diabetes. She told me that the deceased had fits which she said started after his left leg was amputated.
“She said he was an employee at Sabi Mine in Zvishavane and they had come to watch a match between Highlanders and Dynamos.”
Ncube said the CID stopped investigating the case after the pathologist indicated that it was a sudden death.
When Mgura’s relatives were given a chance to question Ncube, Lunga rebutted his claim that she had told him that her husband was diabetic or had fits.
“You have lied to the court that I told you that he was diabetic and I told you that I gave him sugar. I never told you that,” she said.
Mgura walked with the aid of crutches as his left leg was amputated.
Chikerema gave the police conflicting statements in the aftermath of the death last year.
In one of her statements, she claimed that they had picked up Mgura at a bus stop when they found him lying in a drunken stupor while accompanying their aunt to look for transport.
She then changed and said Mgura had hired her for sex from a city bar.
The case was remanded to today when the pathologist Sanganai Pesanayi, who performed the post mortem on Mgura’s body, is expected to testify.
