MDC to demand answers

Zanu PF government fulfils its pre-election promises by delivering in the critical areas of jobs, health, anti-corruption, education, public transport and real economic empowerment.

THE MDC led by Welshman Ncube has resolved to embark on an aggressive programme through its organs and structures to demand that the Zanu PF government fulfils its pre-election promises by delivering in the critical areas of jobs, health, anti-corruption, education, public transport and real economic empowerment.

STAFF REPORTER MDC spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube said in a statement this decision was reached at a meeting of the party’s national standing committee in Bulawayo on Saturday which touched on a wide range of other issues of national importance.

Dube said the MDC had noted the ongoing informal conversations among political parties, civil society, churches and other concerned Zimbabweans to build a consensus from a broad base of democrats to create a new sociopolitical narrative in pursuit of a better life for all.

Last month, the MDC-T renewal team led by former MDC-T secretary-general Tendai Biti revealed plans to form a grand coalition that would present a renewed focus to fight for democracy, economic development and progress.

Under the plan, various political parties would complement each other by bringing together their expertise and efforts to achieve democratic change, rather than forming a single party.

Biti and his renewal team officials broke ranks with party leader Morgan Tsvangirai accusing him of leadership failure, constitutional violations and violence, among other accusations.

The renewal team was reportedly courting the MDC, Zapu led by Dumiso Dabengwa, Lovemore Madhuku’s National Constitutional Assembly, Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn led by Simba Makoni as well as churches and civil society organisations.

Dube said his party’s standing committee was saddened that a year after the harmonised elections, Zanu PF had failed to fulfil a single promise it made to the electorate in the run-up to the polls.

“Instead of the standard of living improving, it has steadily gone on a downward spiral threatening to reverse all the positives of the previous collective national effort,” he said.

“The standing committee conceded that it was shocking to hear President Robert Mugabe, clearly delusional, claiming that the economy was recovering when companies are closing on a daily basis and unemployment has reached alarming levels only rivalled possibly by a country in a civil war.”

He said the committee also received reports on progress the party had made with the council of elders giving valuable input into the direction MDC should take going forward.
