Edwin Sibanda (40) was charged with assault when he appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Story Rushambwa for striking Edmore Nyoni (23) with an axe.
Sibanda was remanded in custody to September 30 while a medical assessment is conducted on him to ascertain his mental status.
The State alleged that on September 16 at around 2 30am, Nyoni was standing outside a night club looking for clients when Sibanda approached him carrying an axe.
Sibanda is alleged to have grabbed Nyoni by the belt and offered to buy him a nicer car.
When Nyoni asked Sibanda why he would want to just buy him a car from nowhere, Sibanda was angered.
He raised his axe to strike Nyoni on the head, but the latter blocked the axe with his right hand and lost three fingers that were chopped off in the process.
