Region V Games in mixed fortunes

AFRICAN Union Sports Council Region V Under-20 Youth Games team boxer Andile Ncube had mixed fortunes after winning his first and losing his second fight in the Bulawayo Boxing Association (BBA) tournament at Manor Hotel on Saturday.

Ncube is one of the Bulawayo boxers who will be representing the country in the sport in the regional games to be held in the city in December. The Tshaka Boxing Club pugilist beat Lancelot Moyo from Lobengula Boxing Club in his first fight of the day in the lightweight category. Later in the day, Ncube lost to Edson Mapeku from HQ One Brigade in his second bout on technical knockout.

BBA vice-chairman Ezwell Ndlovu said Ncube fought well despite losing the second bout.

“Andile played very well, but unfortunately he lost on a technical knockout to Mapeku,” he said. “However, Ncube is a junior while Mapeku is a senior. Ncube will be representing the country in the Region V Games. Emmanuel Katsaruware and Samson Masiyambumbi are the Bulawayo boxers who will be representing the country in the games although they did not feature in this tournament.

“They are getting ready for the tournament that will be hosted by Lobengula Boxing Club on November 1.”

In other bouts, Future Nkomo from Lobengula beat Godknows Sithole (HQ One Brigade) on points while Casper Mnkandla also from HQ One Brigade emerged winner on points against Wiseman Tshuma from Lobengula. Both fights were in the bantamweight division.

The next fight on the boxing bill was also decided on points after Foster Masiyambumbi got the better of Everson Musambidzi of Nkulumane in the lightweight category.

In the only female bout, Amanda Dube beat Thandekile Dube on a technical knockout while it was the same scenario when Milton Moyo beat Future Nkomo.

It was a good day for Mnkandla and Foster as they won their second contests on points respectively.

Mnkandla beat Denzel Mpofu from Lobengula while Foster beat Gift Ndlovu also from Lobengula.
