Eight schools Northlea, St Columba’s, Msiteli, Entumbane, Nkulumane, Sobukhazi, Njube, and St Bernard’s will compete in the Under-14s, U-16s and U-18 levels.

The Old Mutual Inter-Community Cup is part of the financial services groups’ broad sponsorship of schools rugby that covers development of teams in previously disadvantaged communities, as well as provincial and national select sides.

The Matabeleland Rugby Football Board development officer Ruben Kumpasa said the Old Mutual provides talented rugby players with an opportunity to represent the country at junior level.

“This project pays coaches to develop rugby in underprivileged schools. Children are given a chance to be recognised in the national selection system,” Kumpasa said.

He said the Inter-Community Cup would be run every month and the tournament will be played on points basis.

“Points will be awarded during the tournament. Teams which will acquire many points will battle for the Old Mutual national championship title in November,” Kumpasa said.

He commended Old Mutual for the initiative which gives children in the high-density areas an opportunity to showcase their talent as well as to play among and against the best rugby players.

Last year the final of the Inter-Community Cup was won by Entumbane High in the Under-14, U-16 and U-18 categories
