Blanket Mine contractor falls to death

GWANDA — Caledonia Mining yesterday said a contractor was killed on Thursday night at one of its Blanket Mine’s satellite exploration sites.

The accident happened at the GG property at the mine in Matabeleland South on April 30, the firm said in a brief statement.

He fell from a ladder while he was climbing up from the bottom of the shaft after a brief power outage and the authorities have been informed, the company said.

“Blanket Mine will provide all the necessary assistance to the Ministry of Mines Inspectorate Department in its enquiry into this incident,” the company said.

“Until such a time as the outcome of this enquiry has been reached, no further details can be released.

“The directors and management of Caledonia and Blanket express their sincere condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased.”

Efforts to get more information on the accident from Matabeleland South police yesterday were unsuccessful. — Online
