ANTI-RIOT police yesterday maintained a heavy presence at the Gweru Magistrates’ Courts to quell a planned demonstration by city vendors following the arrest of their two colleagues who were charged with disorderly conduct and damage to property.

Tonderai Chengeta and Munyaradzi Mutara — were arrested on Sunday for disorderly conduct after they allegedly took goods impounded by municipal police and smashed the windscreen of a council vehicle in protest against harassment of vendors.

Yesterday, their colleagues ganged up and threatened to storm the courtroom to disrupt the duo’s bail hearing.

However, armed police prevented them from entering the court premises where Gweru magistrate Judith Taruvinga dismissed the pair’s bail application and remanded them to June 4 for trial.

In her ruling, Taruvinga said the two had a pending similar charge.
