According to eyewitnesses, the driver attempted to evade arrest after he was found picking up passengers at an illegal point along the Hwange-Victoria Falls Road.

AII the five were taken to Mpilo Central Hospital after sustaining various injuries. The driver of the Isuzu vehicle allegedly failed to negotiate a curve and plunged into the river with a police vehicle in hot pursuit.

Police had reportedly given chase after finding the driver picking up passengers at an undesignated point along the Victoria Falls Road. However, soon after the accident, the police officers attempted to drive off the scene but their vehicle was blocked by some motorists who immediately meted out instant justice on them.

Vehicles heading to the cemetery were blocked for several hours and some people had to leave their vehicles at the scene and walked to the cemetery for burials.

“The driver of the Isuzu failed to negotiate the curve and plunged into the river as the police vehicle was following at high speed. The Isuzu was picking people from Amakhosi Theatre,” said a witness identified as Sithabile Moyo.
