Teen model fights homosexual allegations

Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style, Makwara said the allegations on male models’ sexuality are often fuelled by their choice of fashion style.

EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD male model Marqus Tadiwanashe Makwara has said he is undaunted by homosexuality allegations and is focusing on his schooling and modelling career.

Speaking to NewsDay Life & Style, Makwara said the allegations on male models’ sexuality are often fuelled by their choice of fashion style.

“People believe that dresses or skirts are meant for women and if a male model wears them you are labelled as homosexual but in the fashion industry there is no such thing. As an artist you can wear what you think will attract the media and other fashionista’s attention. Clothing does not determine sexuality,” Makwara said.

He also noted that societal expectations, gender roles and stereotypes have drawn a line between what is feminine and what is masculine, hence challenging these boundaries is subject to labelling.

“I was bothered to be labelled gay because I am a model and I thought of leaving the industry. I would like society to understand that fashion is an art, and no idea is deemed stupid, weird or sexual. I hope with time and development people will understand that male models are not homosexual, they are just creative men in a creative industry,” he said.

Makwara also noted that there is a lot of enlightenment that needs to be done by the modelling industry to create a safer environment for aspiring models and those already in the industry so that they won't have to defend themselves against such accusations and discrimination from the society.

“I used to keep quiet and harbour my thoughts, but I have realised that I can use my voice to enlighten people about male modelling,” Makwara said.

Makwara, a Lower Sixth student at Seke 1 High School in Chitungwiza, said his relationship with girls is very strong. He does love girls and has dated here and there but for the mean time was focusing on studying and his modelling career.

He also opened up on how homosexual allegations have cost him friends and respect.
