UZ Wolves devour Naba

Wolves were within a few points of claiming the match 3-1 but Naba, a team born out of former UZ students, levelled the match 2-2 and at that time it was anybody’s game.

UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe edged Naba 3-2 in a pulsating men's final of the Harare Volleyball Association (HVA) End of Season tournament played at UZ Courts in Harare on Sunday.

Backed by an expectant and vociferous home crowd, UZ Wolves had to come from a setdown to claim the bragging rights in an entertaining showcase of HVA’s best.

Wolves were within a few points of claiming the match 3-1 but Naba, a team born out of former UZ students, levelled the match 2-2 and at that time it was anybody’s game.

However, UZ Wolves made a statement of intent as they were the first to reach eight points and claimed four unanswered points immediately after the break.

Reigning Harare Premier Volleyball champions, Naba, tried to crawl back into the match, getting the deciding set to 13-14 with the service but the Wolves wrapped up the match to claim a famous victory of their brotherly club.

Wolves coach Simbarashe Mandebvu said it was a victory to savour.

“It was a very difficult match, we had to adjust our game plan in order to see off a determined Naba. Credit to both sets of players, it was indeed a final to remember,” Mandebvu told NewsDay Sport.

“We really wanted to end the season on a high heading into the last round of the Zimbabwe Premier Volleyball League and this victory will certainly spur the boys on and we are looking forward to another good outing this weekend.”

Non-Academic Bachelors Association head coach Munyaradzi Mavima conceded losing to a good side.
