Duo arrested in SA over US$4m Ecobank heist

Abraham Temayi Vumbunu and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu were apprehended yesterday and extradition proceedings are underway to bring them back to Zimbabwe.

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in the neighbouring South Africa in connection with the US$4 million armed robbery that occurred at Ecobank Bank in Bulawayo in October last year.

In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspects Abraham Temayi Vumbunu and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu were apprehended yesterday and extradition proceedings are underway to bring them back to Zimbabwe.

“The due processes of the law are now taking effect for the suspects' extradition to Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe Republic Police is still pursuing the arrest of the other suspects who are linked to this case.

Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that comprehensive efforts to arrest all suspects who are committing criminal acts in the country and escape to neighbouring countries will be religiously pursued for the law to take its course without fear or favour,” he said.

Police also arrested Sibonginkosi Sibanda (49) a security guard suspected to be linked to the heist appeared at the Bulawayo magistrates’ court facing money laundering charges.
