ZIMBABWE squash sensation Ryan Gwidzima will compete in two major competitions in the next two weeks as he takes part in the Scottish and British Junior Open tournaments.

Gwidzima (17), who is back at one of the best squash schools in the world, WyCliffe College in the United Kingdom, plays in the Under-19s category.

The JC Lindsay Scottish Junior Open starts tomorrow and ends on Saturday in Edinburgh in Scotland while the British Junior Open runs from January 3 to 7.

The Ryan Gwidzima Trust, responsible for taking the squash player to Wycliffe in 2018, had by yesterday raised just over US$8, 500 of the $20 000 that is required for Gwidzima to participate in the prestigious international competitions.

“Ryan was accepted to one of the most prestigious squash schools in the UK — Wycliffe College. Through crowdfunding and generous donations we raised enough money for Ryan to attend. He completed Year 8 in 2018/19 and was extremely successful winning several England Silver tournaments,” the trust said.

Gwidzima dropped out of Wycliffe College during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and enrolled at Falcon College in Esigodini where he wrote his Ordinary level examinations.

“Ryan was forced to return back to Zimbabwe in February 2020 due to Covid, where he finished Year 9 doing online learning for Wycliffe. We would like to thank Falcon College, in Zimbabwe, that gave Ryan a scholarship to attend from 2021 to 2022. Ryan has resumed his time at Wycliffe, going into Year 12. He has already played in several major tournaments, causing upsets in the seedings by beating the top ranked players in England and Ryan recently won the Chichester Silver,” the trust said.

The funds to be raised will cater for Gwidzima’s travel, accommodation, food and entries’ expenses.
