Savanna Trust honours Mcedisi Shabangu

Shabangu was best known for his role as Khulekani Ngobese in a South African TV musical drama series Rhythm City.

SAVANNA Trust Production is set to perform a production — Half Empty Half Full in honour of the late South African writer and director Mcedisi Shabangu who directed the production.

The production, which was created in 2013 by the Trust will be held at Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre on May 18-20 and it stars Tafadzwa Hananda and Teddy Mangawa.

Savanna Trust director Daniel Maposa confirmed the development to Standard Style yesterday.

“Half Empty Half Full was produced in 2013 by Savanna Trust. It was devised by the cast and scripted and directed by the late Mncedisi Shabangu.

“In producing the play, Savanna Trust wanted to tell the story of young people from difficult backgrounds, dreams and aspirations but being hindered by the social, political and economic circumstances they find themselves in,” he said.

Maposa said the late Shabangu contributed a lot to Zimbabwean theatre.

“He worked with a number of artistes and arts organisations in Zimbabwe whom he groomed and produced plays with. Since he directed the play, we felt that this performance should honour his role and contribution to our theatre.

“The play has been performed since 2013 to today and it’s one of the longest performed plays. 10 years on the road to be exact. The play won the NAMA, still has a life and will be performed in many venues in future. The play toured South Africa, Malawi, Zambia,” he added.

Speaking about the production, Maposa said it’s about two villagers who grew apart but re- united by fate.

“On the eve of their departure to the big city, they both discover love. Teddy is in love with his fiancée, Vimbayi, who bore him beautiful twin sons," he said.

“Tafadzwa is in love with his own dying sister. The lives of the two village friends take a twist when they learn about a diamond rush somewhere in Zimbabwe. Their hearts yearn for the riches, dreams swelling of greed- they want in.”
