Randall set to release debut EP

Emerging singer-songwriter, guitarist and music producer Randall Tagwireyi

Emerging singer-songwriter, guitarist and music producer Randall Tagwireyi from Harare, is set to drop his brand new single Mberi on February 29, which will be followed by the release of his debut five-track EP titled Zvizhinji which is coming out in March at a date to be announced.

This past Friday the artist hosted a listening session during the Skeyi and Strobo CBD Market hosted at First Floor Gallery Harare.

The EP hints at a rising trend of African experimental music which in Zimbabwe is being brought to the surface by groups such as Bantu Spaceship and others who are challenging expectations and expanding the definition of African music.

His music is defined as Afro-Indie, pop, and rock steeped in Shona urban storytelling, where he subtly merges classic western pop-rock elements with vivid Shona urbanaesque storytelling.

He sings the story of Zimbabwean urban youth and represents a new generation of Zimbabwean alternative artists.

The artist told Standard Style that his father Isaac Tagwireyi who played for Summer Breezy and other local bands influenced his musical background.

“I started liking music at a young age. “My dad used to be a session musician and played for many bands in the country. Since primary I have been liking music so much, I also have other family members that also do music as well,” he said.

His musical taste is also influenced by different genres ranging from Rock to Pop and Jazz music. In 2020 he enrolled at Music Crossroads Academy Zimbabwe (MCAZ) and finished his music studies last year. “I worked on the EP the whole of last year, it has different kinds of influences including rock music, a little bit of electronic, experimental and ambient music.

Tagwireyi co-produced the EP. It features tracks such as ‘Mberi’, ‘Nguva’, ‘Pedu’, ‘Motsi’ and ‘Baba na Mai’.
