EXILED MDC-T treasurer Roy Bennet has called on officials in his party to refuse to be part of a new Zanu PF-led government

EXILED MDC-T treasurer Roy Bennet has called on officials in his party to refuse to be part of a new Zanu PF-led government, should the former liberation war movement “reach out to them to ensure credibility”.

Zanu PF has already clinched a two-thirds majority, but the MDC-T and independent election monitors have condemned the polls as not free and fair, citing a number of irregularities.

Bennet on Friday indicated that Zanu PF might reach out to the MDC-T to try and portray the poll as legitimate to the outside world. He urged party officials to rebuff the offers.

“In solidarity with all our supporters and representatives that were cheated, none of the MDC and its leadership should participate in this sham government,” he said. “This government was not chosen by the people and these cheats must not be allowed to get away with it.

“We fully expect (President Robert) Mugabe to reach out to the party to recruit members to serve in his government attempting to create a tiny shred of credibility. “Do not let that happen. All members of the party should refuse to join any kind of joint government structure.”

On Thursday, Bennet — at a Press conference held in Johannesburg — urged Zimbabweans to collapse a new Zanu PF government by not paying utility bills, taxes and not going to work “just to bring the whole country to a standstill”.

He called on Zimbabweans to resist the new government and repeated calls for a total shutdown of the country to protest what he termed a rigged election.

Party leader Morgan Tsvangirai has said the election is null and void.

“We must do whatever it takes to reclaim our voice and reclaim our country,” he said.

“It starts with refusing to participate in their charade of a government. It starts with refusing to give this government any money — which only goes directly into their own pocket.”

National police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba has, however, warned the public against gathering in the streets to either celebrate or denounce election results.
