The 42,2km race will coincide with the period in which Bulawayo celebrates the conferment of its city status.

A steering committee consisting of officials from Southern Eye, the City of Bulawayo and NAAZ has been set-up to co-ordinate the successful holding of the marathon.

Nesisa Mpofu, the City of Bulawayo senior public relations officer, said the introduction of the full marathon expected to augment the status of the city as a centre of sporting excellence in the region.

The aims and objectives of the race include promoting athleticism, particularly among youth, encouraging tourism to the City of Bulawayo, promoting healthy lifestyles among all members of society, promoting a spirit of volunteerism in the city and the region and contributing to nominated charities.

Mpofu said the marathon would run under the auspices of the NAAZ and be governed by the International Association of Athletics Federations rules.

“The races will touch some of Bulawayo’s famous landmarks and pass through some of the city’s suburbs.

Runners are being invited to compete and to seek registration forms from the Southern Eye offices, on Robert Mugabe Way and 12th Avenue,” she said.
