The 27-year-old Giants and national team point guard was knocked in the lower abdomen during a game against Ivory Coast which Zimbabwe lost 50-66 in Maputo.

“I was knocked in the lower abdomen which resulted in the laceration of my ileum,” Chiponda said.

Chiponda was taken to Maputo Central Hospital where she was admitted for surgery.

Shingi Magede, who headed the Zimbabwe basketball team to Mozambique, arrived with the injured player and said the Sport, Arts and Culture ministry would take care of Chiponda’s medical bills in Zimbabwe.

Southern Eye Sport caught up with Chiponda at the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Airport and she said she was recovering.

“I am now fine, although the doctor said I should not play for the next three months, which means I will resume playing basketball next year,” Chiponda said.
