Peter Ndlovu (29) appeared before Hwange magistrate Sharon Rosemani facing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Although Ndlovu pleaded not guilty, Rosemani convicted him and sentenced him to 18 months in jail, five months of which were suspended on condition he paid the complainant Bongani Mandla Sibanda $383 for medical and transport expenses he incurred during treatment.

Ndlovu was also given a three-month jail term that was wholly suspended for four years on condition of good behaviour. The court heard that on July 7 at around 11pm, Ndlovu and Sibanda were drinking beer at Konani bottle store in Lukosi area when they quarrelled over which music to play.

Sibanda left the drinking spot and went home, but Ndlovu followed him.

When he caught up with him, Ndlovu started insulting Sibanda and then threw a stone which hit his left eye badly injuring him.

Sibanda was ferried to St Patricks Hospital and then transferred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals where his eye was removed due to the seriousness of damage.

A report was made to the police, leading to Ndlovu’s arrest.
