Trailing 17-0 at half time, the home side put on an impressive second half performance on their home ground to score 29 unanswered points and shut out Old Hararians.

The Storm Summer 7s tournament, which is now sponsored by Savanna Tobacco, through their Pacific Storm brand was the first of three Storm Summer 7s Series events organised by the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) ahead of next month’s Zimbabwe Invitational Sevens.

Zimbabwe’s Invitational Sevens, set for Harare Sports Club on March 11 to 15 will welcome a host of international teams such as Russia, Hong Kong, Georgia, Kenya and South Africa.

As the country braces for the international tourney on home soil the Storm Summer 7s tournament offered local players some game time and a chance to impress national 7s team selectors.

There were, however, injury concerns for the national 7s team, the Cheetahs as Old Hararians’ Tangai Nemadire and Old Georgians’ Boyd Rouse picked up injuries during the domestic competition.

ZRU said the two will be assessed over the next few days by the Cheetahs’ medical department.

The Storm Summer 7s tournament saw eight teams based in the northern region participating at the event while four teams from high density suburbs of Chitungwiza, Mabvuku and Mbare took part in a development competition.

Two women’s teams also took part as they prepare for the national women’s 7s team’s participation at the Africa Cup competition set for Kenya in early April.

This Saturday the Storm Summer 7s shifts to Bulawayo with the top six southern region clubs expected to converge at Hartsfield Ground. The Storm 7s Summer Series will then conclude with two select sides being selected from the northern region clubs, one select side from the Southern Clubs and one Barbarians side.
