The national elections will be held on March 29 with current president Cuthbert Dube and Harare City chairman Leslie Gwindi battling it out for the top job at the country’s football mother body.

Sources in Bulawayo have confirmed three names that have positioned themselves for the Zifa vice-president’s post with Zimbabwe Player Agents’ Association chairman Omega Sibanda, Highlanders board member Elkanah Dube and former Warriors manager Ernest “Mapepa” Sibanda front runners.

“Elkanah Dube, Omega Sibanda and Mapepa are some of the names that might jostle for the vice-president’s post from this side of the country. But the consensus among the football administrators from the south is that they will wait to hear if it is true that Gumede is not seeking re-election. If he is not, then one of the three will definitely be a candidate. There is much respect for Gumede and if he is in the race, no one from this side will challenge him,” a source said.

The three were not available for comment yesterday, with Mapepa said to be in the United Kingdom. Another source said if Gumede would not be seeking re-election, then administrators in the region will definitely agree on one candidate for the vice-president’s position.
