PSL player of the week: Anesu Gondo

ANESU Gondo stole the limelight on Sunday after scoring a brace to steer Dynamos to a comfortable 3-1 victory over city rivals Harare City in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League tie at the National Sports Stadium.

Former Triangle midfielder Walter Mukanga who came in as a second-half substitute to replace Devon Chafa weighed in with the other goal as DeMbare leapt to the top of the league table after dislodging bitter rivals Highlanders who were held to a 1-1 draw by coal miners Hwange.

But it was Gondo who made the headlines with his two goals — his first since joining the champions at the start of the season. He missed the first two matches against How Mine and ZPC Kariba.

He was given the nod last week when Dynamos triumphed 3-1 over Bantu Rovers in a match the forceful forward lasted the entire 90 minutes.

He, however, did not score, but on Sunday, the former Tripple B striker who has also played his football in Botswana with be Mobile league side Extension Gunners displayed the qualities of the ultimate striker coach Kalisto Pasuwa has been crying out for when he scored a double which piled more misery on Harare City, yet to win a match since the start of the league campaign.

Gondo was given the nod ahead of strikers Patrick Kumbula and Farai Mupasiri and he repaid the confidence shown in him by the coach with the brace.

Pasuwa said the player was showing great potential. “I am happy with his two goals. He is showing great potential. We have been crying out for goals and we got the goals today,” he said in his post-match interview.

Gondo played for Botswana be Mobile League side Extension Gunners from 2010 to 2012, featuring for the Lobatse-based side in the Caf Confederation Cup before his team was booted out in the second round by Tana FC of Mauritius.

Dynamos now enjoy a cool breeze at the summit of the league table after dislodging old foes Highlanders at the weekend and will face off against new boys Chapungu in a midweek match at Ascot Stadium hoping to maintain their lead. Chapungu are on 10th position on the league table with five points in four matches and will be hoping to collect maximum points at home.
