Zimparks southern regional manager Arthur Musakwa said teams deployed to search for the stray lion would maintain their presence on the ground until the big cat was captured.

Musakwa said the search team had been following leads provided by residents, but none of the information had led them close to the lion.

“The teams that were deployed to search for the lion are still on the ground and they will try by all means to track it down for the public’s safety. If we hear of any sighting we will let you know,” he said.

Musakwa urged members of the public to keep Zimparks updated of any further sightings.

Zimparks has been tracking the lion for about a month now since claims by some residents that they had seen the cat near Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage about 30km from Bulawayo and in the suburbs of Waterford, Douglasdale, Hope Fountain and Burnside.

Its spoor was reportedly seen in Burnside about two weeks ago.

The lion has not killed any livestock or attacked people fuelling speculation it could have escaped from captivity as it is suspected to be tame.

Chipangali officials have dismissed reports that the lion could have escaped from the orphanage.
