Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Tennis Board chairman Zeb Mawisire said they had invited a number of players to take part.

“It is an inaugural tournament and we have invited players from Gweru, Mutare, Harare and anyone who can play and is willing to take part. The tournament is open to anyone from 10-18 years,” he said.

Mawisire, father to tennis stars Vimbai, Fadzai and Tanyaradzwa, said they had organised the tournament for the late tennis player because he inspired a number of children.

“Dumiso inspired a lot of tennis players. He was the first Zimbabwean player to take part in the Wimbledon Open. His rise to stardom is an inspiration to tennis players all over,” he said. Mawisire said the tournament was expected to attract some of the country’s top players.

“I cannot say who will take part, but we are expecting some top players to take part,” he said.

Khumalo who was based in the United States where he attended Florida’s Agriculture and Mechanical University, died in 2010.

He was one of Zimbabwe’s top tennis players having participated in the Euro-Africa Davis Cup, ITF Centre in South Africa, Wimbledon, Kenya Open among other tournaments.

Khumalo was among tennis players that were produced at Emakhandeni Lawn Tennis Club and were coached by Aaron Mpofu.
