The GameCocks have won five matches, drawn four times and lost three games picking up 19 points.

Striker Thomas Chimenya has found himself back in the team scoring two goals in the last two matches.

Chimenya scored the solitary goal in the 1-0 win over Chiredzi FC last weekend and was on target once again on Sunday when Chicken Inn beat the log leaders. But their stern test will be in the next game when they entertain champions Dynamos who are oozing with confidence after handing Highlanders their first defeat of the season at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Chicken Inn head coach Joey Antipas yesterday heaped praises on Chimenya, whom, he said had been working hard.

“We are getting there slowly but surely. Chimenya has improved his game and he has been putting a lot of effort. He has been putting in a lot of hard work, but there is still room for improvement. We just hope he carries on in that vein of form, he said.

“The boys put up a good show yesterday (Sunday) and played according to instructions. We said we were going to the Colliery, let’s have 10 men behind the ball and hit them on the break and it worked. We will look at each game as it comes. We will be playing Dynamos next, probably at BF. They are the champions and we will give them the respect that they deserve, but it will be a different game altogether,” Antipas said.

Competition is stiff this year in the league going into completion of the first half of the season with log leaders Hwange on 22 points just six points (two matches) away from Shabanie Mine, who are sitting in the middle of the ladder with 16 points from 12 matches.

Shabanie Mine held unbeaten ZPC Kariba 1-1 at Maglas on Sunday.

Hwange, How Mine and Dynamos at the top, have 22 points apiece with Highlanders on 21 and ZPC Kariba and Caps United, who beat Chiredzi 2-0 at Chishamiso Stadium, in contest with 20 points each.

How Mine drew blanks against FC Platinum at Luveve on Sunday, with leading scorer Kuda Musharu (eight goals in 11 games) failing to find the target.

The next games could change the whole picture with Hwange away to Caps United, How Mine away to Triangle and Dynamos away to Chicken Inn.

Highlanders will be home at Barbourfields to Black Rhinos while ZPC Kariba host troubled Chiredzi FC at Gwanzura Stadium.
