Modi was appointed as the chief executive officer for the newly-commissioned board while the chairperson of the local organising committee for the Region V games and provincial administrator Khonzani Ncube and provincial education director Dan Moyo will be the supervisors.

Tswagai Fikile Marovatsanga stood in for the minister who was absent due to other commitments and read the speech of the guest of honour on her behalf, applauded the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) for coming up with the structure which will see the national strategy events being managed by one committee in the province.

“This team that I am commissioning tonight (Friday) will be our driving wheel to help our province and our country at large to achieve some of the international conversions which Zimbabwe is a member of in terms of sport,” Moyo said.

The immediate task of this newly-appointed board will be to prepare the province for this year’s 12th edition of the National Youth Games that will be held in Masvingo from August 16-24 were the province will be sending a contingent of about 260 athletes and officials.

“Our expectation for this new sports board is to mobilise resources for the national events.

The 12th edition of the National Youth Games require about $70 000 for the province and basically this means the team has one month to organise and mobilise these resources,” Moyo said.

The Minister of State and Provincial Affairs, who is also the patron for the new board expressed confidence in the new team.

“I have confidence in the team that we have put in place that they have the capacity to take Bulawayo to greater heights, but of course with our support,” Moyo added.

Other members of the new board include Sam Dzimbu (SRC) who assumed the secretariat role, David Simba in marketing and publicity, national high jump record-holder Juma Phiri in the technical team and Thubelihle Sibanda who will be part of the edutainment team, to name a few.
