Cattle production increased by 1,8% to 5,3 million in the 2013 to 2014 season compared to the last season, according to an agriculture ministry assessment report released recently.

HARARE – Cattle production increased by 1,8% to 5,3 million in the 2013 to 2014 season compared to the last season, according to an agriculture ministry assessment report released recently.

A total of cattle 325 974 were slaughtered, producing 55 132 metric tonnes (mt) of beef, out of which 80 percent were slaughtered through the formal sector.

Pig production also increased to 342 000 from 316 000 and goats to 3,9 million from 3,7 million in the last season.

However, sheep production declined from 525 000 to 521 000.

Last year, production of broiler day old chicks increased by 17% to 64,4 million.

Average monthly broiler meat production increased to 2 627mt from 1 920mt in 2012 while egg production declined by one percent to 24,6 million eggs.

According to the report, no major disease outbreaks were reported during the period under review, although isolated cases were recorded for Anthrax, Black Leg, Lumpy Skin and Newcastle in poultry.
