Co-ordinator of the event Nonhlalo Dube said the programme launched in 2013 intends to train, motivate, develop and empower the overlooked sections of, society with comprehensive theatre skills.

“The programme after a snap survey conducted by ND Productions revealed that certain social groups were in most cases being left out in various arts programmes with much focus going to established artistes and areas of easy access,” she said.

“Each year a new group of trainees is strategically selected to undergo training in various disciplines of theatre. In the year 2013 to 2014 the focus of the programme was children living in children’s homes,” she said.

The students to be honoured at this prestigious event are from various homes around the city including Emthunzini Wethemba Children’s home, Khayelihle Children’s Village, John Smale Children’s home, Sandra Jones Children’s home as well as SOS Children’s Village.

All trainees who completed the one-year long theatre training will receive certificates.

Each home will present a 20-minute play that they improvised under the supervision of the facilitator.

The winners of specified categories which include best production, best actor, actress, best supporting actress, best supporting actor and the best stage set will be awarded shields and the home having the best overall play will receive a floating trophy.
