The pre-season tournament was meant to be a prelude to the league which was expected to start this weekend.

However, the league has been held off due to the national top schools tournament which will be held at Falcon College this weekend.

In the women’s category Southern Mavericks beat seasoned Highlanders 26-5 in one of the semi-finals played at Bulawayo Municipal Club while Lakers A beat counterparts Lakers B 39-12 in another.

In the men’s category Southern Mavericks over Giants who did not turn up for their semi-final encounter.

Highlanders overcame stubborn Oilers beating them 46-43 in another semi-final played at the same venue.

In the final Southern Mavericks stepped up their game in both the men and women’s teams.

The women beat Lakers A 38-34 while the men were victorious over Highlanders 29-24.

Sharon Chamwarura and Nyasha Ngove both of Mavericks were voted the most valuable players.

“The weather did us justice and everything went well. Everyone who was meant to come was there and the tournament was played in a highly competitive manner,” BBA secretary-general Howard Phangwana said.

He lamented on the new teams’ poor performance saying if they continued playing the way they did they might not last in the league.

The new teams include Angels and Flame Lilly in the women’s category, City Knights, Elephants and Vets Academy in the men’s.
