THE Zimbabwe Academic and Non-Fiction Authors’ Association (Zana) will on Saturday celebrate the International Day of the African Writer. NONHLANHLA SIBANDA OWN CORRESPONDENT
The event to be held at the National Gallery in Bulawayo will seek to celebrate the lives and sterling works of literary artistes.
Zana secretary for information and publicity Pathisa Nyathi said this year’s event would be different as they cherish and celebrate the works of late writers.
“As has become the tradition, this year’s commemorations will coincide with celebrations of our dear departed writers from this part of Zimbabwe,” he said.
“The celebrations will take the form of burning of candles for the writers.
“We invite all the families of the writers who had done exceptionally well, but have departed.”
Some of the prominent writers include Mthandazo Ndema Ngwenya, Yvonne Vera, Ndabezinhle Sigogo, Mayford Sibanda, Gershom Khiyaza, Ndabaningi Sithole, Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, LC Sidambe ,Joesph Ngulube, Peter S Mahlangu, David Ndonda, Godfrey Moyo, Lancelot Ndawana Ncube, Robert Mele, Doris Nomathemba Ndlovu and Sodindo Ncube.
Authors that had their works published between November last year and next month will also be celebrated.

“We have done this to encourage established and budding authors to keep on writing and publishing their books so that readers have material for entertainment and intellectual enrichment,” Nyathi said.
