JOHANNESBURG — The girlfriend of murdered soccer star Senzo Meyiwa, singer Kelly Khumalo, made a grand entrance on Wednesday night at the sixth annual Chevrolet Feather Awards.

Khumalo walked the pink carpet in a long black and white dress by designer Machere, accompanied by her long-term friend Percy Vilakazi.

“Whether I came out today or 10 years from now there would still be a question: Why did I come out?” she said.

Khumalo was one of more than 400 guests, including Sport minister Fikile Mbalula and Gauteng Economic Development MEC Lebogang Maile, who attended the awards at the plush Urban Tree venue in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Hosted by former YoTV stars Sade Giliberti and Akhumzi Jezile, the awards are held by the LGBTI community to honour its favourite entertainment and sport personalities.

The event upped its game from the theatre-style seating last year to a sit-down dinner with 40 tables named after celebrities such as Dion Chang, Alexander McQueen, Brenda Fassie and David Tlale.

On arrival, guests were treated to canapes, prawns and sushi and, once seated, they dined on starters of mushroom parcels, mains of beef fillet served with potatoes, thyme-roasted plum tomatoes and a selection of mini desserts.

The winners included singer Nhlanhla Nciza, who scooped best styled female and model Masego Maps Maponyane who took best styled male.

Afro-pop group Mafikizolo bagged the musician of the year award, with Mbalula beating swimmer Chad le Clos and cricketer Hashim Amla to score the sports personality of the year award.

Singer Simphiwe Dana won socialite of the year for being “seen at every opening of an envelope or erection of a stop sign”.

Real Gobhoza presenter Amanda du Pont won the hot chick award and Muvhango actor Nkuli Tshirumbula was hunk of the year. Fag hag of the year went to The Link’s Lerato Kganyago.
