Mugabe’s denigration of women deplorable

PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe chose the eighth day into the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence to finally break his silence against Vice-President Joice Mujuru.

The international campaign hopes to raise awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international level.

The 2014 theme of the campaign is “Let’s challenge militarism and end violence against women”. Ironically, Mugabe not only chose to dress Mujuru down during the 16 days of activism, but did so while addressing service chiefs and the recently-installed national executive of the war veterans.

Needless to say these two groupings are both male-dominated and this can only be interpreted as nothing, but a show of force.

It is so sad that this gathering of men zestfully applauded as Mugabe mocked Mujuru for simply wanting to succeed him in both Zanu PF and the government.

And it was the word “simplistic” that Mugabe chose to describe his widowed deputy that caught our attention.

The Oxford Dictionary defines the word simplistic as treating complex issues and problems as if they were much simpler than they really are.

In other words, Zimbabwe is too complex to be run by Mujuru, according to Mugabe, as its problems are not as simple as she views them.

The opposite of simplistic is “complex” and the same Oxford Dictionary defines it as not easy to analyse or understand; complicated or intricate.

What this means then is if Mujuru is simplistic, then we take it that Mugabe is complex. Mugabe appointed the woman as his deputy in 2004, 10 years before she attained a doctorate, meaning she was even much more simplistic then.

Maybe what the president should tell us is why he appointed a simplistic woman as his deputy.

It is worrisome when a president calls his deputy simplistic 10 years later. Is this how complex people like Mugabe work by preferring simplistic minds so they can have scapegoats?

Is Mujuru the only simplistic appointee in your government Mr President? What cost to the country have these simple minds been for the past 34 years.

These simple minds Mugabe has been appointing for 34 years have plunged this previously prosperous and peaceful country into the abyss it is in today.
