What is fashion?

IF YOU asked anyone on the street what fashion is, they would say “what everyone is wearing these days” or “the latest trends”.

People are fashion conscious without realising it. What would make one not wear a hipster they wore in 2005 or a peddle pusher?

Because no one is wearing them today. Fashion is an art and it’s global; it plays a role in people’s lives. Either follow the trend or become an outcast.

It’s not even a matter of googling, but just observing what people around us are wearing. International stars have an influence on Zimbabweans. Chris Brown wore the bucket hat on the video Loyal and this summer the bucket hat has become trendy among men and boys.

What better way can you look good and protect your face from the sun?

Pharell Williams is also a fan of shorts which have been hot this summer.

On the women’s side, we have seen crop tops of different sizes, shapes, colours and designs.

The printed flared skirts have been on the streets since last year. Some are worn with sandals, all stars and even pumps.

We have our own fashion influencers such as the queen of swagger Pokello Nare, who is always on point wearing the latest trends, and Mbo Mahocs, who is innovative and creative in fashion. While fashion trends are what everyone follows, some individuals have style.

Style is personal and is about taking fashion risks. Rihanna and Kim Kardashian are well known risk takers in the fashion world. Kanye West takes risks too and is known as a male fashionista.

We have African trendsetters like Eku Odowor and Genevieve Nnaji both from Nigeria, Bonang Matheba and Nhlanhla Nciza from South Africa, among many others.

It would be nice to see people being creative and taking risks. Instead of skinny jeans, how about vintage jeans, instead of pumps why not try brogues, instead of tight jeans how about baggy ripped jeans? There are good and bad fashion risks, but who cares?

As long as you feel good and look stylish. Hot colours to look out for this summer are; fresh white, cherry red, light rose, lemon yellow and ice blue.
