Mujuru remains dignified

WITH President Robert Mugabe now seemingly spending a lot of time watching Nigerian movies with a rural bent and transferring his screen interests to ex-Vice-President Joice Mujuru, the former number two has remained modest, mature, dignified and guarded in her responses.

She has kept a surprising cool head in a country where responses to criticism are known to be acerbic and at times libelous. For a woman who has been a key subject in a series of political rallies by First Lady Grace Mugabe and a subject of the president’s verbal attacks at all his public appearances to date, including the lavish Victoria Falls obscenity of last weekend, Mujuru has given Zimbabwe a fresh breath of political maturity and astuteness, which major politicians will have to look at closely if they are to retain a modicum of respect in the eyes of the tired electorate.

Mujuru ought to have massive knowledge of misdeeds and political incontinence of the head of State, not forgetting the secret meetings where Gukurahundi, Murambatsvina and a host of disappearances were planned.

She has intimate secrets and knowledge of the most harmful decisions that have led to the deaths of so many political opponents and opposition party supporters. Yet she has not hit back. It is possible that she sees no reason in throwing a frail, frequently falling, and forgetful old man from the frying pan into the fire.

Some Zimbabweans expected fireworks from her with the belief that she is the only one capable of bringing Mugabe to book. Much as she has warned that her silence should not be mistaken for a weakness, what she has said so far has not promised fire and brimstone.

She feels the courts of law will free her, but we are aware of how Zanu PF has chosen, promoted and nurtured judges to work for and pass judgments on behalf of the party.

Is she going to manipulate that system? Many people anticipate a day when Zanu PF will be disciplined and it probably starts with the very members of Zanu PF that have been axed, humiliated and humbled for criticising their own party shenanigans.

If they want to put Zanu PF right, then they should be quick about it. Citizens are hoping for a political bang at a time opposition politics has taken a visit to the sea.
