MLF senior official Crispen Nyoni said his group would forge ahead with the restoration of Mthwakazi, “through whatever means possible” despite criticism from the Zanu PF government.

“To us secession and restoration do not mean the same thing and we will never be pushed to believe these two words mean the same,” Nyoni said. “Matabeleland and Midlands which we prefer to call Mthwakazi will without doubt be restored following the Jameson line which runs through Kwekwe.”

Nyoni said claims by Mnangagwa that Matabeleland would not secede from the rest of the country were misguided. Mnangagwa in June declared that Zimbabwe was a unitary State, adding that anyone who harboured plans to split the country along tribal lines was “daydreaming”.

“If Zimbabwe was unitary, why would there be a Shona life President in Robert Mugabe? Why would there be a somewhat loud assertion that Mnangagwa will succeed Mugabe?” Nyoni asked.

“Why is there de-industrialisation of Bulawayo and movement of companies to Harare? Why is there glaring marginalisation of Mthwakazi in Zimbabwe? Why is there no water from the Zambezi River coming to Matabeleland? Why is there looting of resources from Mthwakazi to Harare? Why did Zanu PF craft the Grand Plan (1979) which is used to subjugate Mthwakazi nationals?”

The South Africa-based MLF member said unitarianism existed in the mind of Mnangagwa only.

“The fact is that Mthwakazi will be restored and no mortal person will ever block an idea whose time has come,” Nyoni said.

“MLF handed its restoration document to Zanu PF some years back and Zanu PF knows that. There are justifications as to why restoration of Mthwakazi should be done.”
