Things are heating up as we are getting into the crucial moments of the season in the top flight of Zimbabwean football. The local fans will be in for a super-exciting finish to the campaign with four teams battling it out for the silverware and just five games left to play. They are two points clear off the defending champions Platinum at the moment. Nevertheless, it’s hard to imagine the current leaders winning the trophy, especially if we take a look at their most recent results.
CAPS United have not been pulling up any trees of late. They lost two and drew one of the last three outings and allow the champions to cut the gap down to two points at the top of the standings. The lack of attacking efficiency is the biggest problem for the head coach Lloyd Chitembwe at the moment. His team failed to find the back of the net on more than one occasion in the last three ties. The table-toppers are the team with the best-attacking record in the entire league. However, their defensive line is one of the weakest in the competition (35 goals allowed in 29 games). They kept just one clean sheet in the last eleven league affairs. This is why manager Chitembwe will be desperate to see improvements in his men’s attacking displays as the backline is obviously not capable of keeping things quiet. Caesars also have great odds for this division.
Platinum had a chance to overtake CAPS United at the top of the ladder last weekend, but they shockingly fell 0-1 at home to relegation strugglers Bulawayo Chiefs. The reigning champions have previously been unbeaten in ten successive domestic ties and we have reasons to say they are in a much better shape heading into the final quarter of the season, in spite of the mentioned defeat on Matchday No 29. Platinum won the competition in the last two seasons (their lone two titles) and we find them as the main favourites to make it three on the trot this time around.
Chicken Inn are the third contenders. They sit three points shy of Platinum in second place but have a game in hand. Given the match in hand is against the 16th-placed Hwange, we can say they are practically level on points with the champions in the second position in theory. They also suffered a defeat last weekend, falling 2-0 at bottom-half Harare City.
Finally, there is Kariba in fourth place, but they are as many as six points behind section leaders without a game in hand. They won just one of the last six games in the competition and we don’t see them as a genuine threat. Also, unlike the aforementioned teams, Kariba have never won the title. Platinum have two trophies (2017, 2018), CAPS United were the champions in 2016, while Chicken Inn took the silverware in 2015. Make sure to read more sports news in our sports section.
